screen protectors for foldable smartphones

The reality is that technology is in overdrive. One minute you’re losing it over your first-ever smartphone, and the next you’ve got companies trying to sell you a phone you can fold up like a piece of paper. Foldable phones have become a new trend, but are they worth the hype? Interested in tech (and a broke college student), I wanted to dig a little deeper into what’s going on with foldable phones.

What’s Up With Foldable Phones?

If you haven’t seen one by now, foldable phones are the transformers of tech. They function like ordinary smartphones, but their screens bend and fold, providing you with a tablet-like experience when they’re fully opened. And companies like Samsung, Google, and even Huawei are betting big on this idea, releasing devices like the Galaxy Z Fold, Z Flip, and Pixel Fold.

The idea is pretty cool. You can own a device that's small enough to fit in your pocket but also unfolds to offer a bigger screen — ideal for bingeing on Netflix, gaming, or even working on the go. Think of it as a phone/tablet hybrid.
It’s pretty much like having two devices in one.

So why are foldable phones so hyped?

Big Screens, Not the Bulk

Screen real estate is a major selling point. Foldable phones allow you to have a larger screen experience without having to carry around a tablet. For those who use their phone for work, multitasking or media consumption, it can be a boon.

Cool Factor

In reality there is no denying how futuristic a folding phone looks. It’s the tech equivalent of Nike Airs — instant swag. Plus, when you pull out your foldable phone, people are going to say, “Whoa, what’s that?”

Innovation is Always Exciting

Foldable phones are the bleeding edge of technology. They illustrate how far we’ve come from the days of flip phones (remember those?). To many, simply owning one seems like participating in a new era of innovation.

What’s the Catch?

For all their excitement, foldable phones aren’t without their drawbacks. Here’s where the dream starts to get a little wobbly:

Price Tags That Hurt

Foldable phones are pricey — “don’t pay rent for a month” pricey. Most models are $1,000-plus, and the bougie ones are way more than that. Not the cheapest of things, especially for students.

Durability Concerns

The mechanism for folding is still in development. The reviews indicate that the screens may develop creases or even fail after prolonged use. No one wants a phone that’s as brittle as their GPA trying to survive during finals week.

Limited Use Cases

Okay, who are we kidding, not everybody needs a foldable phone. You do not need something that can answer emails and get you work done if all you’re doing is scrolling Instagram or texting your friends — a regular smartphone is more than enough. The additional features are nice, but they likely come at a cost that isn’t worth it for everyone.

So, Future or Fad?

My take is this: foldable phones are a glimpse into the future but also not really there yet. They’re like the beta version of what could otherwise be a great thing. At the moment, they’re more of an extravagance for high-tech nerds and affluent first movers. As the technology gets better, and the prices (hopefully) fall, though, foldable phones may be as pervasive as the smartphones we use today.

Until then, I’ll continue to use my trusty (and much cheaper) smartphone. Although, if someone’s handing out a foldable phone, I’m in!

What do you think? Are foldable phones the next generation, or just a fancy gimmick? Tell me — because who doesn’t enjoy a good tech argument over ramen noodles?
